Shipping Container
Shipping container is a type of storage box used to load heavy equipment and dry goods for shipping purposes. Made out of steel, the shipping container is usually 20 or 40 feet long and 8 ˝ feet high, with a pair of doors at one end and a wooden floor. A shipping container is the most inexpensive way of importing and exporting products in and out of the country. The shipping container is said to be the brainchild of Malcolm McLean. McLean invented the shipping container in order to replace the break bulk method, the method of shipping and handling dry goods circa 1930. Today, the shipping container is used throughout the world. There are several types of shipping containers available, with each built to serve specific needs. The Basic Unit is the most popular type of shipping container, made with four walls and two doors. The open top-shipping container also has four walls and two doors, but it does not have a lid. This type of shipping container is widely used for moving tall objects. There is also a type of shipping container that resembles a refrigerator. The refrigerated shipping container is specifically used for transporting food. Tanker shipping containers, which may or may not be refrigerated, are built for moving around liquids. For transporting items such as a yacht, the flat rack-shipping container is used.
Leavesley Container Services are part of the Leavesley Group Company, who trade in many parts of the industry such as property, trading and agriculture. This part of the company provides new and used containers to rent, hire or buy. In the early 1970’s the freight container industry was still very much in its infancy, and there was not much of an after-market for freight containers that the shipping lines no longer needed. This opportunity was recognised, and very soon Leavesley became a supplier of second hand containers to customers around the, many of whom were already surplus stock customers. We have friendly staff on board to help you with any enquiries you may have.
